Lao Yan Ni – Antique rock clay from Taiwan
Lao Yan Ni , also known as "Old Rock Clay" or "Antique Rock Clay," is a special clay used for making teaware and ceramics. It originated in Taiwan and is enjoying increasing popularity among tea lovers.
Unlike natural stones, Lao Yan Ni is a mixture of various minerals, clay, and rock powder that is fired at high temperatures. This creates a unique material with special properties—both aesthetic and functional.
Properties of Lao Yan Ni
Natural mineral composition
Lao Yan Ni often contains minerals such as Maifan stone , volcanic stone , or sandstone . After firing, a rustic, stone-like surface with a patina-like texture is created.
Breathability
The fine pore structure of the clay can absorb impurities from the tea and at the same time promotes air contact, making the taste rounder and milder.
Water treatment
Minerals such as Maifan stone slightly mineralize the water and make the tea appear softer and sweeter.
Patina effect
With regular use, a natural patina forms, which visually enhances the vessel and gives it a lively, characterful expression.
Good heat storage
Lao Yan Ni stores heat efficiently so your tea stays warm longer.
