Unique among the teas - Pu Erh tea

The Pu Erh tea belongs to the world's oldest and most effective teas. It was named after the city of the same name, Pu'er in the southern Chinese province of Yunnan. It was cultivated there 1700 years ago.

The tea is made from the leaves of Qingmao, a subspecies of the tea plant Camellia Sinensis ("from China"). The shrub-like plant can reach heights of up to 30 meters and must therefore be pruned during cultivation. This prevents flowering and fruiting and ensures a convenient height for harvest. The smooth, glossy leaves are dark green and about 12 inches long and 3 inches wide.

The exclusive active ingredients and flavors receives the Pu-Erh tea because of its special manufacturing process and maturation process. It is dark red in color and is therefore often referred to as red tea.

The complex manufacturing process

As part of the original, very time-consuming process, the leaves were steamed immediately after harvest. Then they were pressed into molds and stored as stacked flatbreads for five years to ripen. Numerous microorganisms developed a fragrance and an impressive taste aroma. Due to the very long storage time, alternative starter cultures were used at the end of the 1970s. With a special mixture of microorganisms the ripening process could be accelerated. In this way, a high quality Pu-Erh tea can be produced within a few months.
