Matcha from Japan

Matcha is not only one of the oldest types of tea in the world, but also one of the most fascinating. The green tea, which is ground into the finest powder, originates in Japan and has a centuries-old tradition. Matcha is particularly popular among tea enthusiasts - and for good reason. In this text, you will learn everything you need to know about Matcha, its origins, the different qualities and how to best prepare it.

What is Matcha?

Matcha is a finely ground powder made from high-quality, shade-grown tea leaves. Unlike other types of tea, matcha tea is consumed as a whole leaf, meaning you absorb all of the tea's nutrients. Matcha is particularly rich in antioxidants, which are known to protect the body from free radicals. This makes matcha tea not only a great-tasting drink, but also a healthy choice. Thanks to its high L-theanine content, matcha powder ensures relaxed alertness.

Matcha character

The character of matcha tea is incomparable. The bright green matcha powder creates a creamy, almost velvety texture when frothed. In terms of taste, matcha offers a fine blend of sweetness and a subtle, pleasant nutty bitterness. Matcha caffeine works differently than that in coffee - it releases its effects more slowly, resulting in a gentle energy boost that lasts for several hours. This slow release of caffeine is supported by the L-theanine in matcha, which also has a calming effect.

Production and processing of Matcha

The production of matcha tea is a complex process that is carried out with great care. To obtain the best matcha powder, the tea bushes are shaded with nets for several weeks before harvesting. This method increases the chlorophyll content and improves the nutrient composition of the leaves. After harvesting, the tea leaves are steamed, dried and finally ground into fine matcha powder in traditional granite stone mills. Only the finest leaves without stems or veins are used to ensure a high-quality product. The result is an intense, bright green matcha powder that is incomparable in taste and effect.

Types of Matcha

There are different qualities of matcha powder, which differ in both taste and use. Ceremonial Grade Matcha is the highest quality and is traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies. This matcha is characterized by its mild sweetness and particularly bright color. Culinary Grade Matcha, on the other hand, is more commonly used in the kitchen, for example in smoothies, baked goods or as an ingredient in matcha latte. Both types of matcha have their place, but Ceremonial Grade Matcha is recommended for pure enjoyment as a tea. This way you can enjoy the full effect of matcha and the best taste. In our shop you will only find Ceremonial Grade Matcha.

Preparation recommendation

Preparing Matcha tea is an art in itself. To achieve the best taste experience, you need a special Matcha whisk, also called a Chasen, and a Matcha bowl. For one portion of Matcha tea, put about one to two grams of Matcha powder in the bowl and pour over it initially only a little water ( around 70°C). Now combine the matcha powder and water to form a paste using slow, circular movements. This will prevent lumps from forming in the matcha tea. Then add around 80 ml (depending on the volume of the matcha bowl) of hot water. Use the matcha whisk to beat the powder in quick movements until a fine, foamy layer forms. This allows the aromas to develop optimally and gives you a creamy consistency. Matcha can be enjoyed hot or cold, depending on your preference.

Matcha Effect

Matcha's effects on the body are manifold: Matcha tea contains a high concentration of antioxidants that strengthen the immune system and protect the body from oxidative stress. The combination of matcha caffeine and L-theanine provides increased concentration and mental clarity without the side effects often associated with coffee. Matcha powder can also boost metabolism and support fat burning, making it a popular drink among health-conscious people. All of these properties make matcha an ideal choice for tea enthusiasts looking for both taste and health benefits.
